In recent years, there has been a lot of press about “mini face lifts” and facial rejuvenation without “downtime,” but there is no substitute for a facelift to tighten loose skin of the face and neck. Dr. Proffitt often states with “mini” procedures, you get “mini” results.
At your consultation with Dr. Proffitt, you will be invited to watch an educational DVD on facial procedures and view a library of before and after photos. Dr. Proffitt will take your medical history and conduct a through examination.
Dr. Proffitt will give you his recommendations and answer any questions or concerns you may have. You will also receive a written personalized quote for your surgery. Dr. Proffitt strives for a through understanding of his patients’ desires and expectations while educating patients on realistic surgical goals.

Will My Insurance Pay for a Dual Plane Facelift?
A facelift is a cosmetic procedure, and therefore, its cost is not covered by insurance. The price of a dual plane facelift will be determined by factors such as the amount of time required to perform the surgery, the exact techniques involved, and the type of anesthesia used.
How Is the Surgery Performed?
Surgical incisions are well hidden in the hairline, behind the ear and in the temporal region. Incisions may also be hidden in the fold in the front of the ear and under the chin.
Dr. Proffitt usually performs a two-layer facelift both above and below the jawline. This is called a dual plane facelift. The deeper layer includes the platysma muscle in the neck and the SMAS above the jawline. This is the best way to lift the tissues without the windblown look of pulling the skin too tight. The surgery takes about 3 to 4 hours.
A large bulky dressing is applied. Dr. Proffitt will change this dressing at your first post-operative appointment, usually after one day. You may shampoo hair and shower after three days. Most sutures are removed in one week and some in the hairline after two weeks. Makeup may be applied after the initial sutures are removed at the one-week mark.
Where Is the Surgery Performed?
Dr. Proffitt performs facelifts in an outpatient facility using general anesthesia administered under the supervision of a board-certified anesthesiologist.
What Is My Recovery Time?
You should expect to require at least 1 to 2 weeks off work after your dual plane facelift. Once the sutures are removed at 1 week you can apply makeup. Sutures in the hairline are removed at 2 weeks. There will be bruising that takes 3 weeks to clear. No strenuous activity for 6 weeks. During the entire time walking is ok.
What Are the Risks?
- There is no age limit or minimum age. As long as you are healthy and any medical condition is controlled, you are right for the surgery. AGE IS NOT A GAUGE.
- As with any surgery, bleeding and infection, although rare, can occur. Infection after a facelift is extremely rare.
- All smoking and any nicotine-containing products, including nicotine gum, patches and electronic cigarettes, must be stopped at least six weeks before surgery.
- Muscle weakness can occur but is usually temporary.
- You face may feel tight and constricted, but contrary to most people’s idea, a facelift is not very painful.
Your New Look
After your dual plane facelift, you will be able to enjoy a more youthful and fresher appearance, with final results apparent in two to three months.
